"Jicho Pevu leo iko kali wazito" (Jicho pevu is of top notch today guys). This was a friend's post on a WhatsApp group, one of the umpteenth notifications that plunged my mobile phone. I was irked by the fact that I was not close to TV then. However, intrigued at extreme measure. Trying to get a hint of what was all about; I dashed to my phone book and gave him a dingle. I learnt it was about a ‘Dr. Prophet’ Victor Kanyari…..what a title for a gospel minister!
The name wasn't much new to my eardrums. This was the same person that made headlines sometimes back in an investigative piece over conning, a habit it has become too sweet to abandon. The following day I was on internet trying to get a taste of what had at that point gone viral, I guess faster than the West-African Ebola (no pun intended) -more so among the merciless Kenyans on Twitter, eminently dubbed the #KOTs. These are some of how they ‘roasted’ Kanyari: Things Kanyari Should Heal..
@JaySleekLeBron: Hizi cologne za River Road, after kusweat kiasi msee ananuka ammonia, #thingskanyarishouldheal
@Its_Rizack: #thingskanyarishouldheal feelings za robert Alai....
Then this one…
#ThingsKanyariShouldHeal
Then this one left me in stitches, my stomach and ribs still hurt!!!>>>
@xtiandela: #ThingsKanyariShouldHeal loool...Ole Kiyiapi's gap..ndo akue anasema Thitimaa bila kuzima Candles! .... Kenyans are a crazy lot. they make fun o anything and everything!
Back to Kanyari, I think the embattled prophet has taken it too far by taking advantage of the flock financially, physically, spiritually and even emotionally. At one moment I was made to think that Kenyans have become so vulnerable to the point that every man of the cloth that comes their way sweeps them off their feet and they fall into a trance with them. We have cohorts of them these days. From markets to matatus; I encountered one last weekend on my way to Makueni. Immediately the bus hit the road, he too rose and started doing an ‘alter call’. He had turned weary and noticed no monetary offering was forthcoming. I couldn't believe my eyes when he ‘changed shop’ and started selling herbal medicine. He went repeatedly saying “yaosha mwili yako na uchafu wote” (this cleanses your inner body and all impurities). I was tempted to ask him “Na hii dawa yako yaosha dhambi?” (Do you herbs cleanse sins too?)!
Kanyari is just another son of a con. There’s truth in the adage that “Mtoto wa nyoka ni nyoka” (the young one of a snake is just a snake). So let’s just say he’s a strategic businessman. He hit the market at the most ripen time to dupe Kenyans at their most vulnerable state. We've become tourists and explorers of the gospel hopping from church to church on the look for churches with the most catchy names in town!
Corruption too has been taken a whole new level. Talk of Kenyans and short cuts. They want instant success without necessarily working for it. To an extend they’re thinking God is Kenyan; they can bail their way out even to matters regards to the realm of heaven. To them the end doesn't justify the means.
Majority of people are misled and need utmost intervention like yesterday. Reading the bible is one thing while understanding is the other. We need to focus on the latter and ‘worship in truth and in spirit’, as so in the scriptures. We’re in a generation that believes the pastor more than the Bible.
With this rate and trend the end times will find majority of ‘Christians’ on the run! Before then, I stay vigil for the next ‘Kanyari’ on the spotlight!
